Pam Houston is one of my favorite authors/writers. I first stumbled across her in the early 90s, when I read her award winning short story collection, “Cowboys Are My Weakness”. I loved that most of the stories were set in the west, with an outdoor theme.
Since moving to Colorado, I’ve rediscovered her work, re-reading “Cowboys” and another collection “Waltzing the Cat”. She contributes regularly to “O” magazine and she’s written a novel, that I really like, called “Sighthound”.
Dog lovers will relate to the protagonist’s special relationship with her cancer-stricken Irish Wolfhound , Dante. She sets much of the story, in and around Denver and southwestern Colorado , which is a lot of fun, when she makes references to eating at particular restaurants, that I was familiar with or visiting local landmarks, etc. But, the appeal for me, is her honesty in dealing with relationships, disappointments and our own failings as people, who also disappoint other people.
